The Best Seats in the City: The British Firework Championships from King Point

The Best Seats in the City: The British Firework Championships from King Point

Published on 5th August 2026 On Uncategorised

August is the height of summer on the water, and this year it brings one of Plymouth’s most spectacular nights. On 12 and 13 August, the British Firework Championships return to Plymouth Sound, with the country’s leading firework companies going head to head across two evenings of dazzling pyrotechnics over the water. It is free to watch, it draws huge crowds to the waterfront, and from King Point you are beautifully placed for it.

Some of the best seats in the city

The displays are set off over Plymouth Sound, which means the whole of the waterfront becomes a grandstand. From King Point you can watch from the water itself, or take the short walk up to Plymouth Hoe for a classic view across the Sound. Either way you are close enough to feel every boom echo off the Hoe.

Making a night of it

Come in by boat and settle into your berth for the evening, and you have a front-row base with none of the parking headache the crowds bring. Royal William Yard is a short stroll away for supper beforehand, and the marina is a calm place to return to once the last colours have faded. If you do plan to watch from the water, take care after dark, keep a good lookout and give the display area a wide berth.

A month of sailing too

The fireworks are the showpiece, but August is prime sailing season all round. With long light evenings and the whole of the Sound on your doorstep, it is the month to make the most of a Millbay berth, whether that is an evening sail before supper or a longer trip along the coast.
