Why Winter is a Fine Time to Have a Berth at King Point Marina

Why Winter is a Fine Time to Have a Berth at King Point Marina

Published on 5th October 2026 On Uncategorised

There is a lovely misconception that a marina goes quiet the moment the clocks change. In truth, some of the best months to have a berth at King Point are the ones most people overlook. As October settles over Millbay and the summer crowds thin out, a winter berth in the heart of Plymouth quietly comes into its own, and if you are weighing up where to keep your boat over the colder season, here is why afloat at King Point is worth a serious look.

Your boat stays afloat, secure and watched over

Winter is when peace of mind matters most, and a berth in our naturally sheltered basin gives you plenty of it. Your boat sits afloat behind 24-hour gated access and CCTV, with the marina team on hand and free water and metered power right at the pontoon. When the forecast turns and the wind gets up, there is a great deal of comfort in knowing your boat is somewhere calm and looked after, rather than exposed on a swinging mooring or sitting on the hard where you cannot easily keep an eye on it.

Easy visits on the short days

The joy of a walk-ashore berth does not fade with the season. On a crisp winter afternoon you can park close by, stroll down the pontoon, run the engine, check the lines and the fenders, air the boat out and be home before dark. Those regular visits are exactly what keeps a boat healthy through winter, and a city-centre berth makes them the work of a spare hour rather than a whole expedition.

The season never truly closes

Best of all, a berth afloat means you can still slip your lines when a bright, settled winter’s day comes along, and they do, more often than the calendar suggests. A brisk sail around Plymouth Sound with the low winter sun on the water, or a run across to Cawsand wrapped up warm, is one of the underrated pleasures of the year. With 24-hour access you go when the weather is kind and are never waiting on anyone to let you out. If you missed it, our autumn sailing guide has more ideas for the quieter months.

Warm welcomes a short walk away

And when you step ashore, Millbay looks after you. Royal William Yard is moments from the pontoons, its restaurants, cafes and bars every bit as welcoming in winter as in summer, and perhaps more so with a fire lit and the water grey and moody outside. A morning aboard and a long lunch just up the quay is a fine way to spend a winter’s day.

Thinking about a winter berth?

Whether you want somewhere secure to leave the boat until spring or a base to keep sailing right through, we would be glad to talk it over.
