Spring Prep Tips from King Point Marina

As the days grow longer and the promise of warmer weather beckons, it’s time to shake off the winter cobwebs and get your boat ready for a fresh season on the water. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a first-time berth holder, a thorough pre-season check ensures a smooth start and a safe, enjoyable boating experience.

Here at King Point Marina, we’ve put together a handy checklist to help you prepare your pride and joy for the season ahead.

1. Inspect Your Hull and Topsides

After months of sitting idle, it’s essential to give your boat a good once-over. Look for any cracks, blisters, or signs of damage on the hull. A thorough clean will also help you spot anything unusual. If your boat was stored ashore, this is the perfect time to reapply antifouling paint.

Top tip: If you’re boats been in all winter you might want to consider booking a lift and scrub, to start the season with a clean hull and improved performance.

2. Check the Engine and Systems

The engine is the heart of your boat, so don’t skip this step. Check fluid levels, belts, hoses, and filters. Make sure the battery is fully charged and terminals are clean. If it’s been a while since your last full service, now’s the time.

3. Safety First

Before heading out, double-check all your safety gear. Lifejackets, flares, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits should be in good condition and within their expiry dates. Don’t forget to inspect bilge pumps and test your VHF radio too.

4. Clean and Restock

Give the interior a spring clean—this is your floating home, after all! Check for any signs of damp, mould, or mildew, and make sure your galley is restocked with the essentials. If you store food or supplies onboard, take a look at expiry dates and packaging.

5. Sails and Rigging

For sailing boats, inspect sails and lines for wear and tear. Lubricate winches, check shrouds and stays, and make sure everything is ship-shape before you hoist the sails for the first time.

6. Update Charts and Electronics

Make sure your navigation equipment is up to date. Check for software updates on plotters and GPS systems, and carry the latest paper charts for your cruising area as a backup.
