June brings the longest days of the year, and with them the itch to sail a little further. A hop to the Channel Islands is an overnight passage south from Plymouth, so it rewards careful preparation. Study the tidal streams of the Channel, which run hard and need to be worked rather than fought, and wait for a genuine weather window rather than forcing a date. Plan your watches, prepare the boat and crew properly, and file a passage plan. Done well, it is one of the most satisfying trips on this coast.

What awaits when you arrive

The reward is considerable. St Peter Port in Guernsey is one of the most charming harbours in these waters, with its steep, cobbled old town and a marina in the heart of it. Jersey offers a bigger island to explore, while Herm and Sark feel gloriously unhurried, all clear water and quiet anchorages. There is a distinctly French flavour to the food and the pace, and yet you are still flying the same ensign.
