Race Day in the Ocean City: The Running Festival from Your Berth at King Point
May is a wonderful month to have a berth at Millbay, and this year one weekend stands out. On Sunday 17 May, Britain’s Ocean City Running Festival returns to Plymouth, with the Half Marathon and 10K setting off from the Hoe Promenade. It is one of the biggest days in the city’s calendar, drawing more than 11,000 runners and tens of thousands of spectators to the waterfront.
Perfectly placed for the action
Here is where King Point comes into its own. With Plymouth Hoe just a short walk from the pontoons, you are almost on the start line. Whether you are lacing up to run, cheering someone on, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, you can step off your boat and be part of it in minutes.
Make a weekend of it on the water
Race day brings road closures across the city, which makes arriving by water all the more appealing. Come in the evening before, settle into your berth, and you have a front-row base for the whole occasion. Afterwards, Royal William Yard is close by for a well-earned lunch, or you can simply retreat to the peace of the marina while the city celebrates.
More to enjoy across the month
The Running Festival is not the only highlight this May. Earlier in the month the Barbican comes alive with Pirates Weekend, a short trip across the city from Millbay and well worth the journey for a day of family fun. May really is the month Plymouth wakes up for summer.
If you are cruising the coast and fancy basing yourself in the heart of the Ocean City for a big weekend, we would be glad to have you. Visiting berths can be arranged with the team on 01752 424 297 or marina@kingpointmarina.co.uk.
