Your guide to summer events on the water

Your guide to summer events on the water

Published on 19th August 2021 On Local Area

The summer holidays are now in full swing, and we’re in peak season for events on the water. With lots of activities cancelled this year, including many waterside events, we thought it would be useful to know what is still going ahead.

We’ve put together a guide to events on the water this summer, to help keep the whole family entertained for the remainder of the holiday season.

Here’s our top picks of regattas and waterside events across the Devon and Cornwall coast:-

Fowey Royal Regatta 15th – 21st August

This is one of the country’s best-loved regattas, attracting thousands of visitors, many making an annual pilgrimage. The committee was determined it would take place this year even if they’d have to adapt to some restrictions.

The regatta is one of the UK’s best known sailing events with a long history – there’s a full programme of races for Troys, Fowey Rivers, Cruisers, Falmouth Working Boats and a handicap dinghy fleet. Traditional land-based events will look a bit different this year, but will still bring the community together and create a week of memories to treasure forever!

Sutton Harbour Barbican Performance 19th August

Plymouth’s award-winning brass band will be performing a series of live outdoor concerts by Soundhouse Brass to entertain visitors of Sutton Harbour this summer.

Following a number of popular outdoor concerts staged alongside the harbour in 2019, visitors and locals will be able to enjoy a lively programme of music including marches and popular musical arrangements performed by the community brass band from their position in Quay Square overlooking  Sutton Harbour Marina. These dates are all dependent on weather conditions and government regulations.

Torbay Royal Regatta 20th – 22nd August

One of the oldest events in the country, this regatta is three days of racing, followed by the Royal Regatta Anniversary Challenge Cup Races. Three great days of racing for IRC and Cruiser Classes, Sports boats, PY Dinghies and Junior Classes, with racing taking place on the fine sailing waters of Torbay on the English Riviera.

Torbay offers a spectacular venue and The English Riviera is a great place to be during August. Competitors and their families can be sure of a very warm welcome and will enjoy a friendly atmosphere both on and offshore. Over the years, the Royal Torbay Yacht Club has established a very good reputation in hosting top class regattas and championships.

Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta 26th – 28th August

Dartmouth Port is steeped in history, as is the event, the earliest recorded regatta was in 1822 with 2019 seeing the 175th Port of Dartmouth regatta take place. The week-long celebrations always take place on the last Friday in August. There is a real life ‘festival’ feel to Dartmouth during this week, with something for everyone to do and enjoy; it is the second largest regatta in the UK.

A feast of rowing takes centre-stage on the River Dart and the embankment in the town is a favourite place to watch the events and enjoy the commentary. The Royal Dart Yacht Club, Dartmouth Yacht Club and Dittisham Sailing Club organise the sailing events which are spread over the eight days of the sailing regatta. The dinghy racing for the junior sailors takes place on the lower reaches of the Dart and for the senior competitors in the waters between Dittisham and Galmpton.

Saltash Regatta & Waterside Festival 3rd September

This is one of the most colourful events held in Cornwall and certainly for South East Cornwall is the most popular annual Regatta. It is filled with great activities, cardboard boat races and live music to keep everyone entertained.
